Alvin Joseph Hoppe

December 3, 1950 - March 9, 2002

 

            Alvin J. Hoppe, age 51 of New Munich, died on Saturday, March 9, 2002 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12th at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. Rev. Roger Klassen, OSB will officate with interment following in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday and 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.  Melrose Veterans Honor Guard will pray at 7 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 8 p.m. on Monday.

                Alvin Hoppe was born on December 3, 1950 in Oak Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Odillo and Margaret (Rausch) Hoppe. He married Mary Kunstleben on May 26, 1973 at the Saint Catherine’s Church in Farming, Minnesota. The couple farmed 3 miles South of New Munich for 25 years. Alvin and Mary retired from farming in 1998. Alvin worked at Sand’s Welding in Albany from 1998 – 2002. Alvin was a Veteran of the Korean War. He served in the 2D Infantry Division as a solider from November 18, 1970 until October 1, 1971. He received an honorable service award from the 2D Infantry Division involving the support of the Republic of Korea. He was a parish member of the Immaculate Conception Church in New Munich. He was a member of the New Munich Snow Gliders Club, the Melrose American Legion Post 101, the New Munich Conservation Club, and a member of the MN United Snowmobile Association. Alvin’s interest included snowmobiling, playing cards, traveling and spending quality time with family and friends. 

                Survivors include his wife, Mary Hoppe of New Munich; children, Dana Weber and her husband, Steve of Avon, Stacey Nielsen and her husband, Byron of Yankton, SD, Carrie Hoppe of the U.S. Air Force (Germany), Jason Hoppe of New Munich; grandson, Brett Weber of Avon and Alvin’s parents, Odillo and Margaret Hoppe of New Munich; brothers and sisters, Gerald Hoppe and his wife, Diane of Albany, Karen Heinen and her husband, Vernon of Albany, Marvin Hoppe of New Munich, Steve Hoppe and his wife, Robin of New Munich, Linda Dierkhising and her husband, Neil of St. Cloud.

                He was preceded in death by his grandparents and sister, LuAnn Hoppe.

                Serving as casket bearers will be Alvin’s nephews, Scott Heinen, Brad Heinen, Neil Hoppe, Mark Niehoff, Andy Roering and Brandon Moscho.

                Cross carrier will be Linda Dierkhising, scripture carrier will be Jerry Hoppe and angel carrier will be Kaitlyn Funk.

                Honorary bearers will be the Melrose American Legion, along with Ron Hoppe, Jim Hoppe, Willie Nathe, Rich Gaebel, Stan Kortenbusch, Don Gaebel, Jim Schmiesing, Dennis Thull, “Butch” Thull, Todd Schultz, Steve Moll and Ken Gaebel.

                Military Rites are provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

                Arrangements are with Patton-Schad Funeral Service of Melrose.
