Alvina Marie Barthel

August 10, 1917 - August 5, 2002

Alvina M. Barthel, age 84 of Melrose, died Monday, August 5, 2002 at the St. Cloud Hospital from injuries received in a car accident. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Rev. Vincent Lieser will officiate with interment following in the parish cemetery.

            Friends may call Wednesday from 5 – 9 p.m. and Thursday from 8 – 10 a.m. at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home in Melrose.

            Alvina Barthel was born on August 10, 1917 in Roscoe, Minnesota to Joseph and Margaret (Buchholz) Kunstleben. She married John A. Barthel on May 1, 1934 in St. Martin. She was employed by Farmers Produce in Melrose, which is now known as Jennie-O-Foods. They farmed in Ward Springs and later moved to Melrose where she worked at Jennie-O-Foods until retiring in 1979. Alvina enjoyed handcrafting, playing cards and gardening. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

            Survivors include her children, Eldred Barthel and his wife, Clarissa of Grey Eagle and Dorothy Ferrian of Minneapolis; four grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Veronica Kamphake and Monica Olmscheid of Sauk Rapids, Bertha Haskamp of Melrose, Matilda Moonen of Albany and Theresa Ertl and her husband, Norbert of Holdingford.

Alvina was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Margaret Kunstleben; husband, John A. Barthel on Nov. 18, 1986; brother and sisters, Henry Kunstleben, Rose Wensman and Martha Kunstleben; son-in-law, Edward F. Ferrian; 2 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

            Serving as casket bearers will be Lyle Barthel, John McGowan, Ronald Haskamp, James Ertl, William Ertl, Matthew Vogel, Roger Haskamp and Duane Kunstleben.

Serving as cross bearer will be Heather Barthel and scripture bearer will be Heidi Barthel.

Rose bearers will be Sharon Barthel, Roxane Vogel, Debra McGowan and Cheryl Chapman.

Serving as gift bearers will be Adam Vogel, Dillon Vogel and Ryan Barthel.

Soloist will be Tim Vogel and the reader will be Melissa Vogel.
