The birds are chirping, the grass is greener, and Spring is here! My favorite time of year! Kids are riding their bikes, parents are raking the lawn and the smell of the fresh air brings smiles to our faces! But April is also the time of showers and on those rainy days take time and do some web surfing. This months issue brings information regarding viruses, a tutorial on how to clear your SPAM boxes, and a list of great sites to visit! Sit back and enjoy!

 Your Local Help Desk

Most of you have probably received an email from a meltel.net account recently about your email account being disabled for various reasons. These emails are not actually from anyone at Melrose Telephone Company. These emails tend to be from the following addresses:

management @ meltel.net
BOGUS ˆ the above email account doesn't exist on our email server
administration @ meltel.net
BOGUS ˆ the above email account doesn't exist on our email server
staff @ meltel.net
BOGUS ˆ the above email account doesn't exist on our email server
noreply @ meltel.net
BOGUS ˆ the above email account doesn't exist on our email server
support @ meltel.net
VALID - the above is a valid email account on our email server that is being forged/spoofed

Of the addresses listed above management@, administration@, staff@ and noreply@ ARE bogus senders. The support @ meltel.net account is a legitimate address on our email server that is being forged/spoofed. If you receive an email from one of the bogus senders containing an attachment please do not open the attachment as it is a virus and your computer will then be infected and the virus will mass mail itself to all of the contacts you have in your address book. If you receive an email from support @ meltel.net that contains an attachment do not open it as it is a virus ˆ We would like to emphasize that we never send emails with an attachment from support @ meltel.net. If you receive an email from support @ meltel.net that does not include an attachment it is likely safe to read. As is in this case, many time virus writers design their virus to forge the sender of the message so it looks like it is coming from someone on your local network and that is how they deceive you into opening the infected email and attachment. If you have attempted to open the attachment, make sure your anti-virus software is up to date, and proceed to run a scan of your entire computer. In most cases your anti-virus software will detect the virus, but you also can check this link out and read about the different viruses and how to remove them. http://www.sarc.com

Tech Tips & Tricks

Clearing Spam Mailboxes
For those of you planning on using, or are using our new Spam filtering software, below are the steps for cleaning out your Spam mailbox. The filter will block most of the Spam you receive, but it does not delete them. It puts them in a separate box on our servers and you need to clean this box periodically (depending on how much Spam email you receive). Here are the steps:
1. Go to this link http://mail.meltel.net
2. Enter your username and password.
3. Click Login
4. You will now see a folder named Spam
5. Click on this folder and you will see all mail that has been blocked for you.
6. Delete any messages you do not wish to keep.
**To delete all, there is a delete all option at the bottom of the page.
**To move a message that is not spam to your regular mailbox, there is a Move to option at the bottom of the page. You can then select which mailbox you wish to move it to.

Arm yourself with the information needed to defend yourself from computer viruses.

Question and Answer

Question: How do I change my background on my computer?

The Microsoft Windows background can be adjusted by opening the background display properties. To do this follow the below steps.

1. Open Control Panel.
2. Open Display Properties in the control panel.
3. Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000 users click the Background tab, Windows XP users click the Desktop tab.

By default Microsoft Windows will have a listing of default Windows background. If you wish to change the background to a different picture, such as a family picture click the browse button and browse to the directory of the picture.

Note: Microsoft Windows 95 users only have the ability to set the background as .BMP images, therefore if you have a different format of image you will need to convert it to .BMP image before setting it as the background. All other Windows users should be able to set a .BMP, .JPG, or .GIF image as their background.
