Virus Protection
Snow White, Magistr, Sircam, Klez. These are names of just a few of the viruses that we come across everyday. Most of us have even been hit by one of these viruses, or maybe another, at some point in time. With the use of proper precaution, these viruses can be dealt with before they have a chance to do significant damage to your computer, and will reduce the risk of someone you know of getting one of these also. Besides popular belief, viruses do not come through just email anymore. There are many out there that can enter your program through messenger services, such as MSN Messenger and ICQ. Some of the viruses can do an extensive amount of damage if not taken care of properly in a short time after you receive them. The “magistr” virus for example can bring down your whole computer system in a matter of 2 months if it is not detected. This is why it is important to safe guard yourself against these things.

We here at the Internet Department work diligently at preventing viruses from being received or sent from our mail servers. We have implemented software that will recognize emails that have viruses attached to them. If you try to send out an email with a virus, our software will catch this virus and send you a message identifying the virus. Also it will notify the sender if you were an intended recipient of an email containing a virus.

This is not always 100 % effective. Customers must also provide their own protection from emails with viruses. The best way is to purchase anti-virus software for your computer. Main brands include Norton Anti-virus and McAfee. You must also update your anti-virus software on a regular basis. New viruses come out everyday, and you as a computer user must also keep up with these changes. With the proper precaution computer system disasters caused by viruses can be avoided.

 Tech Tips & Tricks

Attention all E-mail Users:
What you need to know about chain emails and letters!

  • Chain letters that involve money or valuable items and promise big returns are illegal.  If you start a chain email or letter or send one on, you are breaking the law.

  • Chances are you will receive little or no money back on your "investment."  Despite the claims, a chain letter will never make you rich.

  • Some chain letters try to win your confidence by claiming that they're legal, or even that they're endorsed by the government. Nothing is further from the truth.

If you've been a target of a chain email scam, forward the email to the FTC at:  uce@ftc.gov For more information on chain emails go to this site: www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/chainmail/index.htm

 Humor Is Good Medicine

In the back woods of South Carolina, the redneck's wife went into labor in the middle of the night, and the doctor was called out to assist in the delivery. Since there was no electricity, the doctor handed the father-to-be a lantern and said, "Here, you hold this high so that I can see what I'm doing."
Soon, a baby boy was brought into the world.

"Whoa, there," said the doctor. "Don't be in a rush to put the lantern down ... I think there's yet another one to come."

Sure enough, within minutes, he had delivered a baby girl.

"No, no, don't be in a great hurry to be putting down that lantern ... it seems there's yet another one in there!" cried the doctor.

The redneck scratched his head in bewilderment, and asked the doctor, "Do you think it's the light that's attractin' 'em?"
