Will there only be six weeks left of winter? Winter,
what is that? I don't think we had winter this year, but I
am sure it will hit us hard the last six weeks. The days are getting
longer and soon the temperature will raise and we will smell Spring in
the air. Until then we should be cuddled up indoors by the fire, TV, or
better yet by the computer. With that in mind, I've found some fun sites
to visit this month. And just a reminder for everyone February 14th
is Valentine's Day so make it a special one!! Enjoy the sites. REMINDER: Please
email me your favorite sites:

“Cookies” What are they?
A “cookie” is a small text file that a web site can store on a user's hard drive. “Cookies” allow a Web site to store information on a user's machine and retrieve it later.
“Cookies” are what web sites use to gather information about web surfers. This way, web sites can keep information on customers who have visited their sites. They store information on the pages that you have visited, along with information regarding purchases or requests you have made on their site. Some sites require you to have “cookies” enabled in your web browser to make purchases or even to view their sites at all.
Sometimes “cookies” can be very useful to you. One instance of this is if you make a purchase on a web site. A “cookie” will store information about what you purchased. The next time you visit the site, the information stored in that “cookie” will be readily available to the web site in looking up past purchases. Another use of “cookies” is when you fill out a web form with your name, address, etc., “cookies” are used to save this information. The next time you log on to this web site, you will not have to enter this information again.
The web site gets all of this information from the
data stored in that particular “cookie.”
You have nothing to fear though. Cookies cannot read from your hard drive, destroy any files, spread viruses, or get your email address
without your permission. Most web sites even include an expiration date for any cookie it sends to your computer. The cookie will automatically delete when it expires. You can also manually delete “cookies” if you wish to. They can be deleted by going into your browser. Then click on Tools, and Internet Options. Under the General tab, you will see Delete Cookies. By clicking on this all “cookies” will be deleted.

Save your memory!
Slow start up? Too many crashes? Lock-ups? This might help. See all of them little icons down there by your clock? Each icon represents a program that starts running
every time you open your windows program. Chances are good that if you have more than a few, you're running programs that don't need to be running. To minimize the excess use of your memory(ram), and turn off unnecessary programs, select Start>Run> and type "msconfig" into the text field(without the quotation marks), then select OK. Now select the tab marked "Startup". The only boxes that MUST be checked here are: SystemTray and ScanRegistry. To save changes select Apply>OK and reboot to discover how much faster windows will start without all the unnecessary programs.

When you download programs over the internet, many are compressed into zip files to save download time. Before you can install these programs, you'll need to unzip them. Winzip is a utility to decompress zip files.

Q: Why Do People Use Zip Files?
A: Zip files save time and space, and make
downloading software and transferring e-mail attachments faster. To save
disk space simply compress these files into a zip file when they are not
used, and decompress them only when needed. Some common uses for Zip
files include: files available on ftp sites, bulletin boards and
emailing.

Computer
Users Posture
|
|
Do
you use a computer at work? If you do, you may want
to think about how you sit when using your
computer. Long hours in one position can overexert
your muscles and cause injury. Take the following
advice the next time you get caught up in working:
- Change
body posture.
While
waiting, relax your arms or stand up and stretch.
- Don't
prop yourself up.
Allow
the "prop" arm to hang at the side of your
body relax in your lap.
- Keep
the mouse close.
If
you recline while working, move your mouse closer to
your body.

Not Good Posture!
