The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has begun gathering evidence and preparing lawsuits against individual computer users who are illegally sharing substantial amounts of copyrighted, MP3 music files and other copyrighted digital content such as videos and games over peer-to-peer network programs, such as Kazaa, Bearshare, Morpheus and Limewire. The RIAA is expected to use the information it collects as a basis to file what could be thousands of lawsuits. Individuals distributing music on peer-to-peer networks will then be charge with copyright infringement. These lawsuits could begin as early as August 2003.

The RIAA will obtain its evidence by using special software that will scan the shared directories of users connected to peer-to-peer networks. This basically means they are going to search the networks for people who have large amounts of music, videos, games etc. on their computers, and they are sharing it for other users to download. As innocent as downloading music on peer-to-peer networks seems, it is still illegal. The court system has been very clear that this is a serious matter of copyright infringement and violators will be charged.

 Tech Tips & Tricks

Mac Quick tip: Canceling a Drag N Drop-
You decide you want to drag an icon across the screen and place it in a different folder, but half way through you change your mind. You could of course drag it back and drop it where you started, but why take the long way!  It is quicker and easier to press the escape key (in the upper left corner of your keyboard) while dragging and then release the mouse!  Your file/folder returns to it's original place!

Windows Quick tip: Naming a file with Capital Letters
In most cases when naming a file or folder you use lowercase letters, but on occasion you might want to use all uppercase letters for your important files or folders. After you have named your file or folder in all uppercase letters it automatically changes to lowercase letters, there is a quick and easy solution to that problem.
  1. In Windows Explorer, select View>Folder Options.
  2. Click on the View tab.
  3. Look under the Files And Folders area.
  4. Check the Allow all uppercase names box.
  5. Click Apply>OK.

Questions & Answers

Q:
The phone dials, but the Internet doesn’t let me on.

A: The most common message users encounter is: "Error 691: The computer you’re dialing in to cannot establish a Dial-Up Networking connection. Check your password and then try again." This means that the computer did not verify the identity of the user. The following are the most common solutions: Make sure that your CAPS LOCK key is not on when you enter your user name and password. Both of these are case sensitive. The authentication server treats "SMITH," "Smith," and "smith" as three different user names. Verify that you are using the correct user name and password. Sometimes a family member will change the password without informing others.
