Search Engines

What is a search engine? A search engine by definition is software that searches for specific information or files on the Internet using search criteria that you enter. They allow you to search for websites and information using keywords. Thus allowing you easier access to information without knowing a specific websites address. Listed below are a few of the more popular search engines out on the Internet. Along with the name is the website address of each and a short description of each.

  • Google:  http://www.google.com. Searching 2,469,940,685 web pages. Google is one of the most powerful search engines available today. Google allows you to search and browse nearly 4,000 continually updated news sources.

  • Excite: http://www.excite.com. Use this well-known service to  search by keywords or text strings, or browse the categories of  reviewed sites

  • Infoseek: http://www.infoseek.com. Search the Web, email addresses, newsgroups or a company directory by keyword, name or full questions, or browse reviews.

  • Yahoo: http://www.yahoo.com. Original search engine and directory of the Web.  Search the entire database at once, or comb through the categories.

  • Lycos: http://www.lycos.com. Customizable search engine allows you to enter a search string or browse the Web by subject.  With a newcomers’ section.

  • Ask Jeeves: http://www.askjeeves.com. Features a question-answering system allowing anyone to ask a question in plain, simple English without having to use keywords or Boolean search strings.

The easiest way to search is to search using specific keywords.  To do this, first type in the URL of the search engine you wish to use for your search.  Next, in the “Search” box, type in the keyword(s) you wish to search for.  Click on the “Search” button.  The search engine will then search through its database and compile a list of websites that are relevant to the keyword(s) you typed in.  To view these web pages, you simply need to click on the blue, underlined text.

 Tech Tips & Tricks

Black & White not Color

Ink cartridges are an expensive item to buy for your printer. Here is a little tip that can help you save on your color ink cartridge.  Instead of always printing an article or ad in color, print it off in black and white.

Depending on the brand and model of your printer, you can select a setting to print black and white only.  That doesn't mean that the color items  will not print, they will be replaced with black ink.

Next time you go to print, choose Print and select Properties. Under the properties menu, select the button that says black only.

Each printer is different, you might need to explore to find where your setting is located.  You can also look in your printers manual.

Humor Is Good Medicine
The English Language

English is an odd language.
There is no egg in the eggplant,
No ham in the hamburger,
And neither pine nor apple in the pineapple.
English muffins were not invented in England.
French fries were not invented in France.

We sometimes take English for granted,
But if we examine its paradoxes we find that
Quicksand takes you down slowly, Boxing rings are square,
And a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

If writers write, how come fingers don't fing.
If the plural of tooth is teeth,
Shouldn't the plural of phone booth be phone beeth?
If the teacher taught, Why didn't the preacher praught.

If a vegetarian eats vegetables,
What the heck does a humanitarian eat!?
Why do people recite at a play, Yet play at a recital?
Park on driveways and Drive on parkways?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy
Of a language where a house can burn up as
It burns down, And in which you fill in a form
By filling it out, And a bell is only heard once it goes!

That is why When the stars are out they are visible,
But when the lights are out they are invisible.
And why it is that when I wind up my watch
It starts, But when I wind up this poem It ends.

Received from Pastor Tim.
