Spam: What is it? What can you do about it?

Spam is junk email that you usually do not wish to receive. Spam is generally used to advertise products or services and to promote issues, political views, or upcoming events. As we look into the future, it is easy to see that the amount of spam will continue to increase, as it becomes easier for spammers to get a hold of your email address.

These spammers can get your email address in a variety of different ways. The most common way is they purchase or receive email addresses from a third party. They also use special software called “robots” to find email addresses. Another common way for them to get your email address is from Internet chat rooms and bulletin boards. You should be careful while online as to where you enter your email address. Things such as sign up forms, online shopping, and messaging services, are common areas where email addresses are pulled from. Spammers also exchange email address with other spammers on a regular basis.

What can you do once you have received spam? Most junk emails you receive have an unsubscribe feature on the bottom of the email, this is very misleading. All this really does is verifies that you have a valid email address. Thus adding you to their list to mail to in the future. Most popular email clients offer options of either mail address blocking or mail filtering features. Blocking the email address of a spammer doesn’t do much to protect you. Spammers use hundreds of email addresses to send spam, and usually don’t use the same one twice. You would have to block quite a few email addresses. Mail filtering allows you to block emails that contain common phrases that appear in junk mail. Although not all email clients have this feature, it is a nice feature to use to minimize spam. If either of these options doesn’t work, the last resort would be to change your email address, and nobody wants to deal with that hassle! The best protection we can advise is to watch where you post your email address, and who you give it out to.

Humor Is Good Medicine

Are We Not Communicating? A man spoke frantically into the phone: "My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart!"  "Is this her first child?" the doctor asked.   "No, you idiot!" the man shouted. "This is her husband!"

Did I Say That?! Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a robbery suspect who just couldn't control himself during a lineup.  When detectives asked each man in the lineup to repeat the words, "Give me all your money or I'll shoot," the man shouted, "That's not what I said!"

The Getaway A man walked into a Topeka, Kansas Kwik Shop, and asked for all the money in the cash drawer. Apparently, the take was too small, so he tied up the store clerk and worked the counter himself for three hours until police showed up and grabbed him..

Points to Ponder

Why do some advertisements tell us 'not to attempt it at home'? If we can't do it then why bother showing us in the first place?

Why do they say 'New and Improved'? How can it be new if it was improved?

How come some stores have the 'sale of the century' every week?

What's with those billboards proclaiming a 'new tradition of service'? Isn't a tradition something that has been going on a long time?

Why don't Skittles 'taste like the rainbow'?

When they say 'If its in stock, we've got it', do they mean that they will never order anything special for us?

How long does a 'Grand Opening' really last?

If Pringles are so good that once you pop, you can't stop, why do they come with a re-sealable lid?

Whose cruel idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have a "S"in it?

If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes?
